Passing the Torch: Teaching the Next Generation to Weld

One of the most rewarding parts of working in the trades isn’t just building structures or fabricating steel—it’s sharing the craft with the next generation.

Recently, I had the chance to spend time in the shop with my future stepdaughter. I introduced her to welding for the first time. It wasn’t about production, deadlines, or perfect welds. It was about curiosity, learning, and showing her what’s possible when you work with your hands and take pride in what you build.

We started slow, talking about what welding actually is and why it matters. Welding is everywhere—even if most people don’t notice it. Seeing that realization click was a reminder of why this trade is so important.

What stood out most wasn’t the sparks or the steel—it was her focus and determination. Welding teaches patience, attention to detail, and respect for the work. Those lessons apply far beyond the shop. Whether she decides to pursue the trades or take a completely different path, learning how things are built—and the care that goes into building them—has real value.

Moments like this reinforce why craftsmanship still matters. Welding isn’t just about joining metal; it’s about responsibility, safety, and creating something that lasts. It’s a skill passed down through experience, mentorship, and time spent side by side.

As a welder and a future stepdad, I’m proud to share what I know and even prouder to see that spark of interest grow. Teaching her reminded me that every project, big or small, is an opportunity to build more than steel—it’s a chance to build confidence, curiosity, and respect for hard work.

That’s a lesson worth passing on.
