Fixing and Refinishing Two Utility Trailer Gates – Built Back Stronger Than Before
At Westy’s Welding, we recently had two utility trailer gates come into the shop that had seen better days. Both were hardworking trailers. They were used regularly for hauling landscaping equipment and materials. The gates were showing clear signs of wear, rust, and structural fatigue.
We chose not to replace them entirely. Instead, we restored and reinforced them. This gave the customer a stronger and longer-lasting solution. It came at a fraction of the cost of new gates.
The Problem: Worn, Rusted & Structurally Weak

Both trailer gates had similar issues:
- Rusted lower tubing from road salt and moisture exposure
- Cracked welds at high-stress joints
- Bent sections from repeated loading
- Weak hinge points starting to fail
Trailer gates take a lot of abuse, especially when used for landscaping equipment, mowers, ATVs, or construction materials. Over time, small cracks turn into major structural problems if not addressed properly.
Step 1: Cutting Out the Weak Areas
Rather than simply welding over damaged metal (which only masks the problem), we:
- Cut out all rust-compromised sections
- Removed cracked welds completely
- Cleaned everything back to solid, clean steel
This ensures the repair bonds to strong material — not corrosion.
Step 2: Reinforcing & Rebuilding the Frame

Once prepped, we:
- Replaced weakened tubing
- Added reinforcement where stress commonly occurs
- Re-welded joints using proper penetration and structural welds
- Checked alignment to ensure smooth opening and closing
We didn’t just ‘patch’ these gates. We rebuilt them to handle real-world use and are now stronger than ever.
Step 3: Grinding, Surface Prep & Refinishing

After structural repairs were complete:
- Welds were ground smooth where necessary
- Surfaces were cleaned and prepped
- Rust was treated and removed
- Gates were primed and repainted

Refinishing doesn’t just make it look good, it protects the steel from future corrosion and this process also extends the life of the trailer.
The Result: Strong, Clean & Ready to Work

Both gates are now:
- Structurally reinforced
- Properly aligned
- Rust-protected
- Ready for years of continued use
Fixing and refinishing is often the smarter investment. This is true compared to full replacement. This is especially the case when the rest of the trailer is still in solid condition.
Why Repair Instead of Replace?
Replacing a trailer gate can cost significantly more than properly repairing one. If the main frame is still solid, professional welding repair can:
- Extend the life of your trailer
- Improve safety
- Save money
- Reduce downtime
At Westy’s Welding, we focus on doing it right the first time — no quick patches, no shortcuts.
Need Trailer Gate Repair?
If your trailer gate is:
- Sagging
- Cracked
- Rusting through
- Hard to close
- Or just looking rough
Let’s fix it before it becomes a bigger issue.
